Kenya Solar Sector Experiencing Remarkable Growth in 2026

Kenya is experiencing a landmark year for solar energy, with KenGen developing a 42.5MW solar plant and the country securing $1.8 billion for geothermal and grid expansion projects.
The year 2026 is proving to be a landmark period for Kenya's renewable energy landscape, with the solar sector experiencing remarkable growth. Driven by ambitious utility-scale projects, growing private sector investment, and strategic government planning, Kenya is expanding its domestic energy capacity and solidifying its position as a clean energy leader in East Africa.

At the heart of Kenya's solar expansion are significant projects led by major energy producers. The state-owned Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) is developing the 42.5 MW Seven Forks Solar PV Plant as part of its short-term strategy to add approximately 253 MW to the national grid. This expansion comes against the backdrop of a continent-wide solar boom, where African solar installations grew by an astonishing 54 percent in 2025.

Supporting this green transition is a robust financing ecosystem. Kenya has successfully secured USD 1.8 billion in loans for 14 distinct projects focused on geothermal energy and grid expansion. Strengthening the national grid is essential for integrating intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind, ensuring that the power generated reaches consumers reliably.

Kenya already sources up to 91 percent of its electricity from renewables, comprising 47 percent geothermal, 30 percent hydro, 12 percent wind, and 2 percent solar. The country's total geothermal power capacity stands at 988.7 MW, placing Kenya sixth globally and first in Africa in terms of geothermal power development.

For businesses and institutions, the shift to solar presents compelling long-term benefits. While initial installation costs range from Sh5 million for smaller setups to over Sh150 million for large commercial installations, the payback periods of five to ten years are increasingly attractive given the volatility of grid electricity tariffs.
