Nairobi Accounts for 44% of Kenya's Total Electricity Consumption – EPRA Report
New EPRA data shows Nairobi region consumed 2,627 GWh in the half-year to December 2025, accounting for 44.24% of the country's total electricity use.
Nairobi is the undisputed leader in electricity consumption across Kenya, accounting for 44.24 percent of the country's total electrical energy utilisation in the half-year ending December 2025, according to the latest data from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA).
The findings are contained in EPRA's 2025/26 Biannual Energy and Petroleum Statistics Report, released in March 2026. The Nairobi region – which includes Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos, and Makueni counties – saw electricity consumption rise to 2,627.44 GWh from 2,415.44 GWh in the same period the previous year, representing an 8.78 percent increase.
At the national level, total electricity utilisation grew by 8.27 percent from 5,484.54 GWh to 5,938.14 GWh over the same period, underscoring robust demand growth driven by expanding commercial and residential activity.
Among other regions, South Nyanza recorded the highest regional growth rate at 22.53 percent, albeit from the lowest base at 123.38 GWh. The North Eastern region also posted strong growth of 13.73 percent to 666.98 GWh. Central Rift, Mt. Kenya, West Kenya, and North Rift all posted growth ranging from 8.90 percent to 15 percent.
The growth in electricity demand across Kenya presents significant opportunities for certified electrical engineering contractors.
